National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), New Delhi Overview
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is South Africa’s national public health institute, offering reference microbiology, bacteriology, epidemiological, monitoring, and public health research and training to assist the government in combating communicable disease risks.
The NICD provides several specialised diagnostic services and aids in the formulation of policies and programmes to support communicable disease control and eradication initiatives. The NICD’s Outbreak Response Unit and Emergency Operations Centre play a key role in responding to epidemics (EOC). The NICD has BSL 3 laboratories and is Africa’s first high-containment BSL 4 laboratory, making it a leading research, monitoring, and diagnostics facility in the field of infectious diseases.
Next-generation sequencing is performed at the NICD’s Sequencing Core Facility for diagnosis and outbreak assistance. Several NICD laboratories collaborate with the World Health Organization (WHO), offering standard diagnostic services and observation for illnesses including influenza, poliomyelitis, TB, and measles, among others.
